Kindness to Animals
Little children, never give
Pains to things that feel and live!
Let the gentle robin come
For the crumbs you save at home;

As his meat you throw along,
He’ll repay you with a song.
Never hurt the timid hare
Peeping from her green grassy lair;

Let her come and sport and play
On the lawn at close of day.
The little lark goes soaring high
To the bright windows of the sky;

Singing as if ‘twere always spring,
And fluttering on an untired wing.
Oh! Let him sing his happy song,
Nor do these gentle creatures wrong.

ही कविता लहान मुलांना प्राण्यांप्रती प्रेम, दया आणि सहानुभूती बाळगण्याचा संदेश देते. कवितेत सांगितले आहे की, ज्या सजीव प्राण्यांना जाणीव असते, भावना असतात आणि जे जगतात – त्यांना त्रास देऊ नये.

लहान मुलांनी घरात वाचलेले अन्नाचे तुकडे (crumbs) गोडसर आवाजात गाणारा robin पक्ष्याला द्यावेत. तो त्या प्रेमळ वागणुकीचे उत्तर एक मधुर गाणं म्हणून देतो. त्याचप्रमाणे, हिरवळीत आपल्या जागेत बसलेली भित्रा ससा (hare) मुलांपासून घाबरली नाही पाहिजे. तिला संध्याकाळी बागेत मोकळेपणाने खेळू द्यावे.

लार्क नावाचा एक छोटा पक्षी आकाशात उंच उडत जातो आणि तो आनंदाने सतत गात असतो – जणू वसंत ऋतू नेहमीच असतो! तो दमल्याशिवाय उडत राहतो आणि गात राहतो.

या सर्व गोड, सौम्य सजीव प्राण्यांवर प्रेम करावे, त्यांना दुखवू नये – असे कवी म्हणतो. "हे सर्व प्राणीही आपल्या प्रमाणे आनंदी असावेत, त्यांच्या जीवनात हस्तक्षेप न करता आपण त्यांच्याशी सौम्यपणे वागले पाहिजे."

कवितेचा संपूर्ण आशय असा आहे की, प्रत्येक जीव सजीव आहे आणि त्याच्या भावना आहेत. म्हणून त्यांच्याशी दयाळूपणे वागा.

Stanza 1:
Little children, never give 

Pains to things that feel and live!

• Children should not hurt animals or birds, as they also feel pain.

• लहान मुलांनो, जी सजीव आहेत आणि ज्यांना त्रास होतो, अशा प्राण्यांना त्रास देऊ नका.

Let the gentle robin come 

For the crumbs you save at home;

• We should feed birds like robin with leftover food.

• आपण घरी उरलेले अन्न पक्षांना द्यावे, जसे की रॉबिन पक्षी.

Stanza 2:
As his meat you throw along, 

He’ll repay you with a song.

• If you feed birds, they will happily sing in return.

• तुम्ही अन्न दिल्यावर पक्षी गाणं गाऊन आनंद व्यक्त करतात.

Never hurt the timid hare 

Peeping from her green grassy lair;

• Don’t frighten the shy rabbit hiding in the grass.

• गवताच्या मध्ये असलेल्या भित्र्या सशाला त्रास देऊ नका.

Stanza 3:
Let her come and sport and play 

On the lawn at close of day.

• Let the hare come out and play freely in the evening.

• संध्याकाळी सशाला मोकळेपणाने खेळू द्या.

The little lark goes soaring high 

To the bright windows of the sky;

• A lark bird flies high into the bright sky.

• लार्क हा पक्षी आकाशात उंच उडतो.

Stanza 4:
Singing as if ‘twere always spring, 

And fluttering on an untired wing.

• It sings joyfully as if it is always spring and never gets tired.

• तो पक्षी इतका आनंदाने गातो की जणू नेहमी वसंत ऋतू असतो, आणि त्याचे पंख थकत नाहीत.

Oh! Let him sing his happy song, 

Nor do these gentle creatures wrong.

• Let the bird sing happily. Don’t harm such gentle animals.

• त्याला आनंदाने गाणं गाऊ द्या. अशा निरुपद्रवी प्राण्यांना त्रास देऊ नका.
